Inauguration of the Plasma Furnace at HIF in Freiberg
On August 27, 2024, the Saxon Minister of Science Sebastian Gemkow inaugurated the plasma furnace at the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology together with the Scientific Director of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, Prof. Sebastian M. Schmidt, the Director of the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF), Prof. Jens Gutzmer, the Administrative Director of the HIF, Dr. Simone Raatz, and the Vice Rector for Research at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Prof. Tobias Fieback. Prof. Ajay B. Patil, Head of the Process Metallurgy Department at the HIF, supervised the construction of the plasma furnace. The construction was funded by the recomine-alliance in the BMBF program “Wir!-Wandel durch Innovation in der Region”. Tetronics Technologies Limited (Swindon, United Kingdom) supplies plasma. UTF GmbH (Brand-Erbisdorf, Germany) was involved in the construction of the plasma furnace system. We can finally close the gap in the alliance and in the research landscape in Saxony. In future, we will also be working more intensively on innovative solutions for the holistic utilization of ash and slag. The first tasks for this unique infrastructure can be found in the recomine project Waelue "Holistic Recovery of Recyclable Materials from Rolling Slags", which has already started. Many thanks to all colleagues and supporters who made it possible for the planning and construction of the plasma furnace to be implemented so professionally: Philipp Büttner, recomine advisory board, Volker Recksiek and many more.
